Alice Springs-the Red Centre

We are excited to make it to the centre of Australia, Alice Springs, a bit of a milestone in the journey. We had a couple of overnight stops after Coober Pedy, the most memorable being Rainbow Valley Conservation Park, great camping up close to the escarpment, watching the changing colors with the light. The girls have taken to putting up their own tent and taking themselves off for small walks, very independent campers and explorers.Alice Springs is a great place with a diverse community, lots of travellers and Aboriginal languages spoken. This is the first time the girls have seen Aboriginal people up close so they have lots of questions about them (some too complex too explain). The Macdonnell Ranges are a dramatic background to the town, it really is an amazing place to find in the middle of the desert.Today we visited the School of the Air, which was fascinating and educational, the girls loved learning abut the remote students virtual classrooms, much improved now of course with the internet and webcams. Tomorrow we are off to visit the old Telegraph Station which is how Alice Springs originated. The weather is warm and sunny during the day but down to freezing overnight (lucky Jules had the foresight to pack his old hiking thermals for me, I won't be posting a picture of that, not a good look).Next stop is Uluru via the Macdonnell Ranges. Lots of love from the intrepid travellers....By the way for anyone wanting to make a comment we have flicked a magic switch so you don't have to go through the process of giving your life story to Google and signing up to gmail. It should be easier to comment now if you so desire....

  1. Nice one. I haven't been to Alice for 30 years. I hear the road is paved now!
Will be keeping an eye on you folks...My brother and his family (with 2 wee girls also) are heading around anti-clockwise ex Sydney. Hopefully, you can all catch up on the road.

  3. I like the photos Mac-Myers, keep 'em coming. Ruby is missing Alice but ever the events planner, she is turning to focussing on Alice's homecoming which funnily coincides with her own birthday so Alice officially has a girly invite 3 months in advance. You will be happy to know that it was -0.4 when I got up yesterday morning, but the days have been fine and have had a few walks to school. You must give me a rundown on the family meals of late, are you on camp pie yet? We had a mini-merkin coffee session yesterday, only you and Abbie not in attendance, but Jane & Todd were subs. OK you hoods, have fun take care, love from the Summies xx

    1. Nice work little lady Ruby, a woman after my own heart, gotta love an event. I'm will be so excited to see everyone I might have to beg Ruby for an invite too. If its any consolation it was 0 degs when I got up as well, but that rapidly translates to 25 degs and sunny in a matter of hours in the desert. On to Uluru tomorrow. Xx

  4. Hi Kylie, Great to read your blog and the photos are fantastic. The girls look so healthy hope the adults are feeling the same. Brings back memories of my younger years. Seem to remember Annie and me on a trip to Wilpena Pound sleeping in a Morris Miner with our feet in the boot and the back of the back seat down. Luggage between thee seats provided the headrest. Even had a little ledge at the back window for a candle and nibbles. Love to the girls. Judy M

  7. Hi Jules and Kylie and Alice and Bridget,

Sounds like you are having a fantastic trip. Wish I were there as well !! It's Michael and Akiko just back from a 7 week trip through the Pacific to Hawaii and then to England, France and Japan. Your descriptions of the scenery and your photographs are great. We can't wait till we do our own "Road Trip" one day. It must be a fantastic education for Alice and Bridget. They will have fantastic memory's of the Great Australian Bush when they go back to school.

Take care and drive safely. I will be looking forward to great anticpation to your further posts
