Coober Pedy-Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all the lovely Mum's out there, especially Pam and Joan. Well here we are for a dusty old Mother's day in the post-apocalyptic landscape of Coober Pedy. We went on an underground mine tour this morning, saw an underground house (I think my claustrophobic side came out in the cramped conditions) and the kids dug around for some souvenir type opals. Not a blade of grass in sight, the main street is very sparse and most shops look shut, although some of them are underground so it's hard to tell. The weather is warm, not too hot, although I'd hate to be here in summer when the temps reach the high 40's. We are definitely on the tourist trail now, all the grey nomads and assorted other types are heading on the same route we are, straight up the middle. Till next time.... Book review: Have just finished reading Stephanie Alexander's new book 'A Cooks Life', interesting and frank woman and of course lots of delicious foodie descriptions. Am now beginning to read a fiction book, ' A Visit from the Goon Squad'-great so far (Bec, promise to return with only a sprinkle of red dust:)

  1. Hey it looks absolutely beautiful out there. I wouldn't mind one of those underground houses in Coober. Have you resorted to the paul newman pasta sauce yet? very underrated. I'm not sure if you know but you've left the comments section only to registered users, so if you don't have a gmail account its kind of a convoluted system. U might want to change it to allow anonymous posters. Anyway have a blast. Paul

  4. Also, for Jules, I bought 18 bales from Andrew. He dropped by last weekend. had lost his phone, and my phone number and message with it. I cancelled my 16 with Mark but kept yours. Mark cant deliver for another week or so, but the cows are happy with the hay i got so no panic. Still no rain. Dad had 250mm over the past two months compared to our 20mm. Back to pre-la nina patterns. Dont hurry home. Hopefully we get wet in winter. Cows seem happy but the two families have not integrated. No drama. No fighting. Sorry to hear about the desert leg, but probably for the best. Maybe next time with the Shennans.
